Crochet GERBERA flower
|
Gerbera is very popular and widely used as a decorative garden plant or as cut flowers. It is the fifth most used cut flower in the world (after rose, carnation, chrysanthemum, and tulip).
You can also make some other popular flowers with the use of my FREE patterns to the Crochet CALLA LILLY or a Crochet TUILP. Both have a YouTube video tutorial with a step-by-step guide to walk you through the process of crocheting and assembling the flowers.
The gerbera used most commonly is also known as Gerbera x hybrid. As they are technically a daisy, sometimes they are even called gerbera daisies and therefor gerberas are considered as April’s birth month flowers.
Of course, different colors of flowers have different meaning but in this post where I will be making a yellow crochet gerbera the bright and sunny crochet flower represents friendship and happiness and that makes it perfect gift to give to your friends as birthday flowers.
Even dough the crochet gerbera pattern is beginner friendly there are several bits and pieces that you have to crochet. Each petal of the crochet gerbera flower is made individually and is sew on (or glued) to the base of the crochet flower. The gerbera flower is made from outer petals called ray florets, inner petals called trans florets and a disc (disk florets).
Note:
- make 16 petals - rays of the crochet gerbera flower
- make base of the flower to sew on the petals
- the inner petals are crochet around disc
- for the disc, use a different darker contrasting color of yarn (usually dark brown)
- for the inner petals use a different shade of base color
- sepal should be made with green yarn

Steps:
- crochet 16 petals
- crochet the base to sew the petals
- crochet the disk of the gerbera flower
- crochet the sepal for the flower
- sew 8 the petals (or glue them) on the base
- sew next 8 petals on top and between the petals of the base
- sew the disk on top of the petals
- sew the sepal on the back side of the flower – add wire for the stem
The flower in this tutorial is made with a 3mm crochet hook and appropriate yarn weight. I will add two more options for the petals if you are using different sizes of crochet hooks and yarn. Smaller sizes
Pattern for the petal - ray floret of the crochet gerbera flower:
- R0: ch 10
R1: in each top loop of the chain start with, ch1 to go into the R1
- sc, sc, 7hdc, {5dc} all in last chain stitch, that makes a turn
continue on the bottom loops of the chains with:
-
7dc, sc, sl st, ch1 and join with the 1st sc of R1

And now make 15 more to have 16 all together.
The easiest way and order to sew the petals for me was (if you look at the base as a clock) 12, 6, 3, 9 and the last four petals between them.
For reference, you can look at the picture below (top left corner).
The next row of petals you sew between the petals of the base.
For reference, you can look at the picture below (bottom right corner)
On top of the petals attached to the base sew (or glue) the center disk. To add the sepal first put the wire in the magic ring and then glue the wire. You can sew the sepal with the wire (or glue) to the flower base. Wrap the wire with yarn and your crochet gerbera flower is DONE!
