Round crochet Christmas lights

|

An alternative way to decorate your christmas tree without using any real Christmas lights. Use bright colors and you can make a long string of lights to put on your tree or around your house.

Fun fact: Christmas lights are also known as fairy lights, festive lights or string lights) are lights often used for decoration in celebration of Christmas, often on display throughout the Christmas season including Advent and Christmastide. (source – Wiki)

A Christmas decoration is any of several types of ornamentation used at Christmastime and the greater holiday season. The traditional colors of Christmas are pine green (evergreen), snow white, and heart red. Blue, pink, and white are often used to represent winter, or sometimes Hanukkah, which occurs around the same time. Gold and silver are also very common, as are other metallic colors. Typical images on Christmas decorations include Baby Jesus, Father Christmas, Santa Claus, and the star of Bethlehem. (source – Wiki)

Different sizes of crochet hooks and yarn can give you different sizes of lights.

In the tutorial for the rows I am using some metallic silver thread. Just to give it some sparkle.

You can make the lights two different ways. Ether continuous rounds or in rows.

With the continuous rounds it is faster but you do see at the top, where the color changes. With making it in rows you finish with the first color invisibly and then attach the second color.

I think that changing the colors does make it perfect.

The stitches used in this pattern for the Christmas lights are:

  • magic ring
  • sl st - slip stitch
  • ch - chain stitch
  • sc - single crochet stitch
  • dec - sc decrease stitch (join 2sc in 1 - back loops only)
  • inc - sc increase stitch (make 2sc in 1)

If you are doing it in continuous rounds you just crochet and don't loose count. But if you are doing it in rows don't forget to do a ch1 in the beginning of the row and a slip stitch to join the last stitch with the beginning of the row.

To avoid the seam of the rounds joining make sure to:

  • forget all that you learned about crocheting in rows and
  • make a chain one in the beginning and pull it tight to make it as small as possible
  • make the first stitch in the same stitch where you make the chain one
  • the pull the slip stitch at the end when joining the row really tightly

I learned this from... I lost the link but I know the lady was saying all the time “Forget what you know”, “pull tight”, “start where you finished”. I will try to find it.

The pattern is the same for both ways of crocheting the round little Christmas lights:

  • Start with a magic ring
  • R1: 6sc – 6st
  • R2: 6inc – 12st
  • R3: {sc, inc} x6 – 18st
  • R4: 18sc – 18st
  • R5: 18sc – 18st
  • R6: 18sc – 18st
  • half way through R6 you should stuff or fill the Christmas light
  • R7: 9dec – 9st
  • R8: CHANGE COLOR! If you are doing the Christmas lights in continuous rounds you just change the yarn, if you are doing it in rows you cut the yarn and do an invisible join (see YouTube tutorial if you need help with that) then start with a new yarn in any stitch you want. Don't forget the chain 1!
  • R8: 9sc – 9st
  • R9: 9sc – 9st
  • Cut the yarn and pull it through. Now get a sewing needle and sew together just the back loops of R9. The front loops will make a nice edge. Pull tight and sew in the loose end.

Yes, you can add the rows with the increase of 6 in each one. And you have to add more rows also for just the sc rows - so it wont look like someone sat on it ;) I will also be making a bauble tutorial.

What if I wanted to make bigger? Can I just add rows of increases? Will it work?
