Classic granny square

|

A classic crochet granny square. It is perfect to begin your journey are a crocheter because this is one of the basic things in my opinion, that every crocheter should learn.

You can change the colors in two different ways.

The first one is starting and attaching the new row - and new color with a ch3 that already counts as the first double crochet.

The second way is using a standing double crochet stitch instead of the ch3 in the beginning. In the YouTube video you can see how to make a standing double crochet stitch.

What I would also like to point out is to start each round or row on the different side of the granny square.

The written method on doing a standing double crochet stitch:

  • yarn around the crochet hook 2 times - the end tail should be at the back of your hook
  • insert the hook in the project (stitch) where you want to make the standing double crochet and wrap the yarn over the hook
  • pull the yarn through your work and you should now have 3 loops on your hook
  • yarn over hook and pull through first 2 loops - 2 lops left on the crochet hook
  • yarn over hook again and pull through the final 2 loops - 1 loop left and your STANDING DOUBLE CROCHET STITCH is done

The stitches used in this pattern for the crochet single or one color granny square are:

  • magic ring
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • ch – chain stitch
  • dc - double crochet stitch (US terms)
  • standing double crochet stitch

Pattern walkthrough:

  • CORNER: 3DC, CH, 3DC
  • CORNER IS MADE IN THE CH OF THE PREVIOUS ROW
  • SIDE: 3DC
  • SIDE IS MADE IN BETWEEN TWO CLUSTERS OF 3DC OF THE PREVIOUS ROW

Smaller gaps written pattern:

  • magic ring
  • R1: ch3, 2dc, ch1, 3dc, ch1, 3dc, ch1, 3dc, ch1 - join with a sl st in the 3rd chain
  • TURN THE WORK TO THE BACK SIDE
  • R2:ch3, 2dc, ch1, 3dc,{(3dc, ch1, 3dc)} x3 - join with a sl st in the 3rd chain
  • TURN THE WORK TO THE FRONT SIDE
  • R3: (ch3, 2dc), {(3dc, ch1, 3dc), (3dc)} x3 (3dc, ch1, 3dc) - join with a sl st in the 3rd chain
  • TURN THE WORK TO THE FRONT SIDE
  • R4:(ch3, 2dc),  {(3dc, ch1, 3dc), {(3dc) }x2, } x3 (3dc, ch1, 3dc), (3dc) - join with a sl st in the 3rd chain

You can see the beginning of the new round with a ch3 in this YouTube video tutorial:

The pattern for the standing double crochet beginning of a new row is the same. So instead of the ch3, you just do a standing double crochet stitch.

You can see how the standing double crochet stitch is done in this YouTube video tutorial:

The largest was not larger then these ones. The smallest... well I did try one with a 1.5mm crochet hook but didn't know what to use it for. I am thinking of making them supper small to make earrings or a pendant perhaps.
